Summary:
Interviews patients to collect required registration data, and enters patient information into computer database.
Obtains required signatures, assembles patient files, and forwards to nursing staff.
Directs or escorts patients to appropriate departments.
Assembles pre-admission forms, answering telephones, updating computer records, and so forth.
Reports to ER Registration Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Reports to the ER Registration Supervisor.
Interviews patients or their representatives to collect and verify required data for registration that includes, but not limited to, name, address, phone number, attending physician and individual or agency responsible for hospital bill.
Enters patient information into computer database, as well as other information such as tests ordered by physician, and direct from lab slips.
Obtains required signatures on forms according to established procedures, and ensures information recorded is complete and accurate.
Assembles patient files that include registration forms, test requisitions, and photocopies of insurance cards, driver's license, and pre-admission orders.
Delivers patient information and forms to appropriate units immediately.
Answers telephones and responds to inquiries according to established policies for release of information.
Answers questions from nursing personnel and physicians' offices regarding admissions and patients' locations.
Collects monies due from patient's insurance copays, coinsurances, and deductibles.
Collects monies from private pay patients as set forth by policies established by CMH.
Directs or escorts patients to assigned units according to established procedures.
Corrects or updates computer records to reflect changes in patient status, patient transfers.
Ensures corrected information is forwarded to appropriate departments.
Does NOT perform patient care for any reason at all.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Computer literacy, which includes the ability to perform basic entries, with extreme accuracy.
Work requires excellent communication skills in order to interact in a professional manner with patients, administration, visitors and physician's concerning immediate care issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
A High School diploma or equivalent is required; two years of College with an emphasis in business preferred.
One year of experience in insurance verification, precertification, billing, or related insurance experience is preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally performed in an office or clinical environment with some exposure to infectious disease or hazardous working conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Speaking, hearing, and visual acuity to perform tests on patients and receive and interpret instructions.
Work requires the communication skills necessary to exchange information on factual matters, greet visitors, and explain hospital policies.
High volume data entry requires prolonged sitting, and manual dexterity.
Able to manipulate various electronic and mechanical devises found in the business office, such as calculators, computers, copiers, etc.
